Security Issues in Peer-to-peer Systems

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems, where all nodes in the systems are considered to be equal, have attracted the attention of researchers and general public in the last few years. While these systems are being used in noncommercial application domains such as sharing music or files, their use in the mainstream applications is prevented by their lack of security. In this paper, we discuss some security issues that have major influence on using these systems in mainstream applications. In particular, authentication, anonymity, session resumption, and trust are discussed here. We discuss these issues with respect to some specific real-life P2P systems.
