A Realistic Military Environment for Agent Development

Using agent-based systems to develop techniques for solving problems in the military domain is an exciting area of recent research. In some cases, the techniques may be incorporated into decision support aids; in others the intent is to eventually field agents themselves, possibly controlling autonomous vehicles such as mine sweepers or UAV surveillance aircraft. To date, agent techniques have been developed assuming simplistic environments, which might suit simple real-world problems, such as carpet vacuuming, but are not appropriate in the military domain with unpredictable terrain, weather, and hostile forces. This paper reviews an effort aimed at integrating an agent technique with a military Computer Generated Forces simulation system and proposes an architecture to provide a rich environmental test-bed for future military behavior technique development which can leverage the investment in legacy modeling and simulation systems. The resulting system could be used in the future to evaluate promising techniques for possible fielding in a real world environment.
