Stable keyhole and constant joint penetration are critical in ensuring weldrnquality during keyhole plasma arc welding (PAW). Understanding of the keyhole isrnfundamental for developing a sensor to monitor the stability of keyhole PAW and thernvariation in the joint penetration. Because the back-side width of weld pool is sensitivernto the stability of the keyhole and the variation in the penetration, an efflux plasmarncharge sensor (EPCS) is proposed to monitor the back-side width of the weld pool. Arnlinear model has been established to estimate the penetration from the sensor signal.rnExperiments verified the potential of the proposed sensor in monitoring stability ofrnkeyhole.
