The middle reaches area of Heihe River Basin is a part of Hexi Corridor in the arid North-West China. Complicated interactions between surface water, groundwater and soil water under influence of human activities are the main features of hydrological processes in this area. In this paper, an annual water balance model is presented to investigate the relationships between the inflow coming from Qilian Mountain, the water losses in the middle reaches area and the outflow for the lower reaches area of Heihe River. In this model, interactions between surface water, groundwater and soil water are simplified in equations with a few parameters. It is successfully applied to reproduce the streamflow at Zhengyi Gorge of Heihe River during 1981~2000.
