Organic matter in Longkou brown coal, Datong, Shenfu and Pingshuo bituminous coals was extracted in succession with CS_2, n-hexane, benzene, methanol, acetone, tetrahydrofuran (THF) and THF/methanol (2: 1, V/V) mixed solvent. The masses of the resulting fractions were compared among different coals and among different fractions. Much more CS_2-soluble fraction (F1) was obtained from Datong and Pingshuo coals than from Longkou and Shenfu coals. Datong, Shenfu, Longkou and Pingshuo coals afforded the largest amount of benzene soluble but hexane insoluble fraction, acetone soluble but methanol insoluble fraction, methanol soluble but benzene insoluble fraction and THF soluble but acetone insoluble fraction, respectively. GC/MS analysis for the resulting fractions shows that different fractions have quite different compositions. The composition of F1 from Datong coal was discussed as an example.
