While there is no doubt that in order to meet coatings regulatory and property expectations there are needs for creative chemistries and formulations, there is also undeniable that in order to enhance existing technologies there is a need for understanding of molecular level processes in coatings and correlate this information with the film formation and macroscopic properties. This can be accomplished by utilizing modern characterization technologies, which when combined with other macroscopic testing methods will allow us to understand the structure-property relations in organic coatings. Because FT-IR and FT-Raman surface/interfacial spectroscopies offer numerous opportunities, especially if combined with other mechanical, thermal, and separation methods, they will play a key role in understanding of coatings in the 21st Century.
