Enhanced performance properties provided by the new MF1 resin versus conventional HMMM type or UF crosslinked systems were presented. Lower VOC and free formaldehyde levels were achieved. Cure temperatures evaluated ranged from 140 - 450℉ (60 - 232 ℃), confirming the suitability of MF1 for use in coatings for wood, plastic, and metal substrates. Melamine-formaldehyde resins are preferred for kitchen cabinet coatings due to superior stain and detergent edge soak resistance, however, conventional MF resins do not cure as well as the UF resins. The enhanced reactivity of MF1 coupled with its low free formaldehyde content makes it a clear choice over UF resins in low temperature bake applications. General industrial and coil coatings can also be optimized with MF1. Specifically, general industrial coatings can be formulated with lower VOC emissions and more flexible coil coatings can be produced with less post-cure embrittlement (MF1 has little tendency to self-condense).
