Hydrolase enzymes catalyze the bond-scission of a substrate in vivo, however, it has been established that they also catalyze the bond-forming of a substrate monomer to produce a polymer in vitro. Based on these findings we have first demonstrated new polymerization reactions catalyzed by a hydrolase enzyme to lead to a polysaccharide and a polyester.
