A novel category of coloured aluminium pigments is presented where colour pigments are bound in a silica coating on aluminium flakes. Such effect pigments make it possible to produce metallic finishes with high chroma and high purity in hue. Two different grades have been evaluated: a coarse grade combining high chroma with metallic sparkle and a fine grade for decorative coatings. Manufacturing of these pigments and their production in a pilot plant is described. The colouristic advantage of these pigments compared to classical aluminium pigments are demonstrated and application possibilities of these pigments are shown.
