Class Separation of Aromatics Compounds in Diesel Fuels

In this work the HPLC method IP391 with refractive index (RI) detection, is used as a starting point to develop an analytical procedure to characterize the mono-, di-, triaromatic fractions of diesel fuels in terms of structure-property related sub classes. The chromatographic profile of forty sample of hydrotreated light cycle oil (HDT-LCO) with varying aromatic content were processed with a deconvolution algorithm allowing constituents' peak separation. The same samples spiked with standard mono- and diaromatic compounds were used for peak identification. Three sub classes were identified within the monoaromatics peak, namely alkyl benzenes, tetralines and mono-dicyclohexyl benzenes. For the diaromatics, deconvolution showed six sub peaks, two of which were assigned to naphthalenes, and substituted biphenyls. The remaining unassigned peaks will be the object of future work.
