The author concludes that systematic market research is becoming an established discipline within the chemical industry. The Internet, public domain and multi-client surveys have done much to provide increased information transparency in the chemical industry. However, companies seeking competitive advantage need to go beyond this available information in order to gain competitive advantage. Companies, both large and medium sized, will increasingly turn to the use of customised market research to complement their internal market intelligence. Systematic market research requires a more pluralist approach to project design than is usually the case in mainstream consumer market research. This is especially true in the additive business where such a wide range of influences can impact the product and its market. Market research firms wishing participate in this sector must offer a special set of skills. The practitioner of chemical market research has to operate in a relatively restricted and secretive environment which places additional limitations on the application of classical market research techniques.
