The conclusions are: 1. Retained austenite has the potential to increase the susceptibility to hydrogen cracking because residual stresses in weld joints can pull hydrogen out of this phase to be later accumulated at regions of stress concentration. 2. Yttrium oxide is an irreversible hydrogen traps with a binding energy of 70 +- 5 kJ/mol-H. Irreversible traps have shown promise to improve hydrogen management in steel welding due to the capability to capture hydrogen at elevated temperatures during welding thermal cycles.
