To analyze the requirements of professional welders regarding the weldability of Ni-base FCAW consumables, a Quality Function Deloyment (QFD)-approach is applied. Special emphasis is put on the influence of the flux composition on the properties of the slag system. Based on the theoretical background of the slag forming elements, key features for the slag development are identified. Using a vibration viscometer, optimal flux compositions are found depending on the requirements on the welding position. Thereby the effect of the main influencing parameters can be determined and interpreted on a more physical basis. In addition, the role of the flow properties, the arc stability, the arc intensity, the slag detachability, spatter and weld metal cleanness are considered. By experiments in a fully instrumented welding lab, the overall performance can be quantified and subsequently optimized.
