In this paper, an intrinsic but less studied problem that frequently happens during contention resolution in backoff based collision resolution process (termed as cross-collision in this paper) is comprehended and a simple but elegant solution is proposed to alleviate it. The solution is named as Cross Collision Exclusion (XCE). The notion behind the XCE is to first foresee the set of contention slots over the backoffed window where cross-collision can occur and then to deterministically nullify contention slot selection chances in such cross-collision prone set. A Markovian model is formulated to emulate the characteristics of the XCE in Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) based Medium Access Control (MAC) in Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). The carried performance analysis based on the model reveals that, at zero computational and communication overhead, the XCE escalates channel throughput with reduced packet delay.
