This paper describes experiments conducted on a steel model silo, 3.2m tall and 0.94m diameter, aimed at measuring the wall pressures during discharge of a cohesionless sand. To determine the rate of flow of the material during discharge, a displacement plate was placed in the material and connected to a pulley equipped with a multi-turn potential meter. Two types of floating pressure cells have been developed and their output compared with predicted theories. The output from the dynamic tests indicates the cells to be very responsive to instantaneous pressure fluctuations.
