Modern control engineering trends are summarized and some applications to combustion control are reviewed, on the basis of recent work reported by various companies. These include in particular Fuzzy Logic, Artificial Neural Networks, Genetic Algorithms as well as advanced sensors and processing techniques based on optical sensors and artificial retina. They reveal a revolution in the way modern control systems are designed, tested and implemented. This is made possible by the rapid evolution of control system theory, the availability of very low cost and very flexible microprocessors and the development of new sensing techniques. A new vision sensor developed by CSEM, which has an interesting potential for flame control, is also presented.
