Spray Forming of Cast Alloys, an Innovative Alternative

The technique of atomization of liquid metal and spraying the dispersed droplets on a moving substrate, where the deposit compacts into solid state or projecting the spray into molds combines advantages from cast, wrought and powder metallurgical materials. Parameters based on physical, metallurgical and technological investigations have been determined at the University of Bremen, department of production technique, and IWT within a focused research program since 1994 till up to now. Billets of ferrous- and non-ferrous-alloys, showing high complexity and therefore strong segregations, are now spray cast with homogeneous microstructure of high isotropy and machine parts, like tubes, rings and sheets are to be spray formed. This procedure avoids many process steps of machining which leads to a reduction in production costs and allows also recycling of waste material. An overview about possibilities and future development is given in this contribution.
