PIPE LINE CORROSION IN CANE SUGAR INDUSTRY

Mild steel is the chief construction material being used for fabrication of almost all the pipelines in sugar factories. These pipe lines are used for transportation of water, Raw Cane Juice, clarified cane juice syrup and molasses etc. The mild steel is very much susceptible to corrosion under sugar factory processing conditions. The effects of some of the process parameter viz. pH, temperature and Brix on the corrosion rate of mild steel in Raw Cane Juice, clarified cane juice and water have been studied. A linear increase in corrosion rate was found with decrease in Brix. At p~H below 7, the corrosion rate increases and below p~H 4, it increased more sharply. No significant change in corrosion rate was found at temperature up to 70℃, but above this the rate increased considerably.
