Feed materials comprise the majority cost of a ton of liquid steel. Unfortunately, there is typically more emphasis on the "cost" of scrap and not enough on the "value". It is useful to develop an analysis of the true value in use of various materials charged to the EAF. Variations in equipment capabilities and product requirements, as well as local geographical factors influencing scrap availability, need to be considered for each "value in use" analysis. Developing a true understanding of the value in use of various scrap types in a given EAF operation involves several steps including: 1. Developments of goals ― EAF T-T-T, energy consumption, scrap cost/heat etc. 2. Data collection 3. Data analysis 4. Process model development 5. More data collection and model validation 6. Adjustment to scrap mix and operating practices With profit margins being squeezed for most steelmakers, it is expected that this will become an area of considerable focus for the steelmaker over the next 5 years. Ameristeel has taken a pro-active approach to developing the necessary tools for evaluation of scrap value in use and is currently working with Nupro Corporation to gain insight into scrap use in their EAF operations.
