Edelstahl Buderus in Wetzlar (EBW), Germany, installed 1996 the first MINSCAN, at its electric arc furnace, in order to increase its availability and productivity through fewer refractory repairs and improved gunning practice. After the good results, EBW diced to upgrade the maintenance system Now, this system has been replaced by the world's first fully automatic refractory maintenance system. The system consists of a laser scanner, LaCam, to measure the residual refractory thickness of the electric arc furnace, and of an enhanced version of the robotic MINSCAN maintenance system. These components are linked together by means of the interface module "SCANTROL . This module evaluates the measurement data and controls the robotic maintenance unit, automatically applying the right repair material at the right place in the required amount. Due to the new fully automatic refractory maintenance system there are several savings. Decreased repair material, energy costs and maintenance time.
