"Advanced" Packed Bed Type Scrap Melting process (Advanced PSM) was verified to be one of the most attractive 100% steel scrap melting methods for both EAF works and integrated steel works through the scrap melting tests using the 15ton/hr-scale furnace of the SSE pilot plant and the numerical simulation by the 3-dimensional mathematical simulation model. The following results were obtained; 1) Shredded scrap could be melted by fuel ratio of 84 kg/tHM for scrap melting using blast furnace coke. 2) Low coke ratio of 42kg/tHM operation, equivalent to about 30% to total fuel, was performed stably. 3) Tin removal ratio of 44% (Target value of 29%) was obtained through the tin removing test using tin coated can scrap (Sn = 0.08 wt-%). 4) Iron yield of more than 99% and the refractory erosion of less than 0.15mm/heat were achieved. 5) Dioxins in outlet gas were less than 0.1ng-TEQ/Nm~2 through the exhausted gas treatment system of SSE. 6) Advanced PSM is available from pilot scale to commercial scale furnace as steel scrap melting process.
