Each of the three industrial mold powders used in this study, exhibits a particular crystallization behavior, when subjected to the copper finger test. The observed differences in crystalline phase content and distribution result in different heat transfer properties, which correlate with the in-service behavior of the three mold powders. The proposed experimental procedure of copper finger test allows to solidify mold fluxes with high cooling rates. The resulting microstructures of solid slag films are similar to those obtained in industrial practice. Comparison of crystallization behavior and heat transfer properties of different mold fluxes is therefore possible in laboratory conditions; coupled with the melting rate determination, this technique will facilitate the selection of optimal mold powder for a particular casting set-up.
