This study demonstrated a headspace gas chromatographic(HS-GC)method for determining the toxic species of commercial polyamide polyamine epichlorohydrin(PAE)which was an important wet strength resin in paper industry.These harmful species were organic chlorides,including 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol(DCP),3-chloro-1,2-propanediol(CPD)hydrolyzed by epichlorohydrin(ECH)that was not completely reacted during synthesis process of PAE,and a small amount of the residual epichlorohydrin.The vapor-liquid equibilibrium of samples could be achieved at 90℃ for 20 min in a closed headspace sample vial,then the volatile compounds in the vial was determined by HS-GC using a flame ionization detector.This method required no pretreatment.The results showed that the method has a good measurement precision(RSD < 0.6513%),the LOQ of the analysis was 0.67%、0.00197%,and 0.264%(in mass fraction)for CPD,ECH and DCP,respectively.)The present method was very simple,accurate,and fully automated.Thus it could be easily applied to analyze the toxic organic chlorides in commercial PAE.
