The improvements which can be obtained in the surface properties of iron alloys by means of processes involving high-energy beams (ion, electron, laser beams) are illustrated and discussed. The most important fields of application of each processing technique are pointed out and some significant results are reported. Particular attention is given to surface treatments carried out using laser beams owing to the higher reliability and flexibility of the technique, and to the consequent larger availability of both experimental and technological results. The importance of Moessbauer techniques to characterize the surface modifications produced on iron alloys is emphasized.
