Bioactive polymer-ceramic composites have been produced based on the use of brittle bioactive fillers in a ductile matrix. The use of bioactive fillers at these high filler levels has lead to bioactive responses both in vitro and in vivo. The polymers have provided sufficient tough matrix to lead to non-brittle materials which can be used clinically. Non-degradable and degradable materials have been manufactured. Composites technology and the correct combination of both filler and matrix can be used to optimise the material for the intended clinical application.
