For several years, an important work has been on-going at Alcatel Space, regarding CMGs , in the frame of CNES contracts, which is presented in this paper. The first part is dedicated to CMG functional requirements. For this, varied missions were taken into account, including ESA and CNES needs (LSPIM/SPECTRA and PLEIADES). Then, main CMG technical concept choices are presented. A special attention is paid on the key functions, which are the flywheel bearing and the gimbal bearing. To validate the chosen CMG concept, a CMG Breadboard has been manufactured and tested. This CMG Breadboard is based on off-the-shelf components. Overall design and mechanical components are first described. Next, the description focuses on CMG Breadboard Electronics, designed by Alcatel ETCA. Then, main functional test results are produced and analysed: kinetic momentum and gyroscopic torque performances are especially examined. Finally, taking advantage of acquired experience, the Flight Model CMG current design is presented.
