This paper presents the pointing error analysis performed for the Planck spacecraft, a spin-stabilised platform for use in mapping the cosmic background over the entire celestial sphere. The satellite is commissioned by ESA as part of the Horizon 2000 program. Preparation of error budgets for the Planck spacecraft has required definition of new metrics for specification and development of the required frame sequence for error identification, and for specific analysis of error sources to develop the required inputs to the pointing budgets. This activity has not only led to the set-up of a methodology for generation and maintenance of the Planck error budgets, but also offers the possibility to be used as the basis for a more generic approach for spin stabilised spacecraft. This could, in time, yield spin-stabilised platform extensions to the ESA Pointing Error Handbook.
