摘要

Municipal solid waste has become a major concern now-adays as the amount of waste generation has increased tremendously due to rapid urbanization and industrialization, population growth and improved life-style. Brunei has a per capita solid waste output of 1.4 kg per capita per day, which is second only to Singapore among the ASEAN countries. From the total waste produced, 70% goes directly to Brunei's six landfills, a meagre 2% is used for making compost, and the rest is disposed of in other conventional ways. The surge in GDP of 2.3% between 1999 and 2007 and increased number of registered business from 2,577 in 1998 up to 7,240 a decade later is a growing concern for proper waste management. The paper highlights the existing solid waste management practice and focus on the strategies that will lead this nation towards sustainable waste management.
