Start-Up and Operation of a Large Zero Blowdown Petro-Chemical Complex in Alberta

Dow Chemical Canada Inc. has built and is operating a large petro-chemical complex in Alberta, Canada which has eliminated all aqueous discharge to the near-by river. This was accomplished even though the complex contains a large cooling tower, numerous steam generators, a four bed demineralizer, condensate polishers, and other water processing equipment. This paper briefly reviews the process design, then discusses operation of the water systems. Unexpected problems and their ultimate solutions are featured.
