A very strong acceleration field can cause the compositional gradient of two-component bulk material system. It is one of the promising means to fabricate a functionally graded material (FGM). Our proposal is to use centrifugal field to fabricate FGM thin film. This concept is a new one and little investigations have been made so far. We further expect that the compositional gradient of thin film materials will be possible in lower acceleration field and lower temperature compared with bulk materials. For this purpose, we are developing a centrifuge machine to make FGM thin films. We fabricated thin films in a strong acceleration field (5,400 G) by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method to supply enough energy to generate a compositional gradient. The fabricated samples were analyzed by EDX. According to the results of the quantitative elemental analysis, a compositional gradient is clarified by the combine effect of a strong acceleration field and PLD method.
