Design Considerations for a 3x4f Optical Fiber Ribbon

In an effort to improve fiber access within an optical fiber cable, a ribbon construction containing subunits is proposed. The purpose of this ribbon construction is to allow easier and rapid access of fiber groupings within an optical fiber distribution cable used for Fiber To The Premise (FTTP) applications. This ribbon facilitates the removal of 4 fiber groups from a 12-fiber ribbon and yet maintains much of the functionality of a standard 12f ribbon (ribbon strip, mass fusion splicing, fiber furcation, etc). The use of subunits with internal geometric coating features within this ribbon construction allows a field technician to propagate the separation of the ribbon by hand.
