Armored Self-Supported Optical Fiber Cable for Sewer Applications

The use of optical fiber cables in sewer systems is attracting more attention by carriers due to its fast installation, lower installation cost, no excavation of the roads, and less interruption to city traffic. One of the possible solutions is self-supported installation of the cable in the upper part of sewer pipes where it will not affect the function of the sewer systems. Because of the uniqueness of the sewer systems' environment, the cable should have rodent and chemical protection as well. This paper introduces a new design of armored, self-supported optical fiber cable for sewer applications, installation methods, and related accessories. This cable design can provide mechanical strength for self-supported installation of manhole distances below 80 meters and rodent and chemical protection during operation.
