Single Mode Fibers (SMF) showing improved bending resistance compared with standard SMF is a mandatory requirement for the FttH deployment. In that aim, we have developed a trench-assisted step-index SMF applying the advanced plasma based PCVD/APVD process. This allows for a significant improvement of the SMF bending sensitivity compared to classical step-index SMF: bending loss reduction from one to two orders of magnitude for bending radii in the 1 to 10 mm range is experimentally obtained. Such improvement has been obtained while staying fully compatible with the low water peak ITU-T G.652.D standard attributes. In addition, we show this fiber behaves just like a classical SMF with respect to OTDR splice monitoring. When spliced with classical SMF, the average induced splicing loss is below 0.05 dB when selecting an appropriate program from the splicers program library.
