Catalysts possessing different pore structures were tested in the laboratory for activity, life and sulfur adsorption capacity at sub-dewpoint Clans conditions. The best catalyst had very high macroporosity combined with high microporosity. The results show an improved ability to load with sulfur while still maintaining Claus conversion capability and indicate faster regeneration characteristics. These results are being integrated into the BP (Amoco) Sub-Dewpoint process, referred to as "CBA ", to produce designs that can meet higher average sulfur recoveries than previously available.
