The continuous hot metal temperature probe was installed and evaluated at the Great Lakes Division's A-l blast furnace as an alternative to the conventional dip thermocouple practice. The probe has been developed into a reliable tool with a service life of over 500 hours. The probe measured temperatures compare favorably with those measured by the dip method. Because it offers real-time data, the probe is being developed as a furnace heat level predictor.
