How to produce energy on the Moon or Mars is one of the problems faced when setting up facilities, whether manned or not, on these planets. Nuclear power is a solution which should be studied since it has certain advantages like practically unlimited energy and operation at night. The proposed approach is based on the use of proven technology for building an affordable, safe and reliable power system. Consequently, the programmatic risk, the development duration and cost are limited. A preliminary design and sizing have been carried out for a system compatible with Ariane 5 payloads characteristics. A preliminary safety analysis has been achieved and demonstrates the acceptability of the radiological risks.
