摘要

The New Views of the Moon initiative developed naturally from the recent successes of Clementine and Lunar Prospector in lunar exploration, and has grown into a CAPTEM led program (Ryder, 1999). The initiative intends to bring together researchers from all aspects of lunar science in order to define and reach towards common goals in studies of the Moon's structure, geologic history, composition, formation and evolution. To this end, two international workshops have already been completed (Jolliff and Ryder, 1998; Gaddis and Shearer, 1999), and a series of special sessions have been hosted at recent Lunar and Planetary Science Conferences (LPSC 1998, 1999 and 2000) in Houston. In addition, a special section in the Journal of Geophysical Research has also been published (see Jolliff, 2000 for an introduction to the section). The initiative ultimately aims to publish a 'capstone' volume outlining the current understanding of the Moon in all research areas, combined to form a comprehensive review of the way we view our satellite today. The next steps toward this will be the third New Views Workshop, to be held in October 2000 in Houston, and the publication of a second special section in JGR in 2001.
