Two bench scale biological aerated filters (BAFs) packed with ceramic and activated carbon respectively were evaluated to determine their impacts on the formation potentials of 21 kinds of disinfection byproducts (DBPs).The results show that the BAFs can remove effectively the precursors of eleven measured DBPs,whose formation potentials were above detection limits.The removal efficiency of DBPFPs by the activated carbon BAF (BAF-AC) were 1.2-3.2 times higher than that by the ceramic BAF (BAF-Ce).Both biodegradation and adsorption were observed to play an essential role on the removal of DBP precursors by BAFs.The removal of emerging DBPFPs were superior to THMFPs and HAAFPs.
