Effect of Flow Control Devices of Tundish on Cleanliness of Billets

The fluid flow of four-strand tundish of round billet under two different weirs has been studied by water model experiments. The effect of tundishes controlled by original and improved weirs on cleanliness of billet has been studied by industrial trial. The results show that the improved weir can increase residence time of molten steel in tundish and removal rate of inclusion and decrease dead volume fractions of tundish. Compared with the original weir, the removal percent of the total oxygen from tundish to billet is obviously increased, and the macroinclusion content and the microinclusion number in billet are decreased by 51.9% and 10.81%, respectively. Also, the total oxygen and inclusion distribution between different strands of improved tundish are more homogeneous.
