A recently developed range-independent propagation model called ORCA has shown to be capable of solving broadband propagation problems efficiently. This model is based on a layered normal-mode approach including an efficient eigenvalue solver and frequency interpolation techniques. The kernel of this model has been adopted at SACLANTCEN for inclusion in an efficient range-dependent and broadband channel simulator called PROSIM (PROpagation channel SIMulator), utilising the adiabatic approximation. The performance of the model is compared to the more traditional normal-mode model (C-SNAP, see Ref) based on numerical integration of the mode functions in depth. It is shown that calculation of broadband transfer functions up to 10 kHz of shallow water acoustic waveguides involving hundreds of modes and thousands of frequency components is performed in a few minutes. This is 2-3 orders of magnitude faster than traditional normal-mode models.
