The estimation of shallow water bottom properties is a non-trivial problem. Since physical measurements have significant drawbacks (such as high cost, limited time for spatial samplings, and extrapolation to acoustic parameters which vary as a Junction of frequency, space, and time), remote sensing techniques combined with inversion techniques have become the preferred approach. Over the past few years numerous promising and imaginative methods have been developed. However, it has been difficult to make direct comparisons between these methods. In June 1997 a workshop was held to address the issue of benchmarking geoacoustic inversion methods. This paper will discuss the results presented at that workshop and will also discuss the design of future workshop cases.
