The multi-component white cast iron that was developed several years ago is an alloy containing strong carbide forming elements such as Cr, Mo, W, V. These elements form special carbides with extremely high hardness not only as eutectic but also as secondary precipitates in the matrix. After the basic and systematic researches, this alloy has been applied to the hot work rolls. Preferable chemical compositions of the alloy was found to be 5mass%Cr, 5%Mo, 5%W, 5%V and 2%C content equivalent to the carbon balance of nearly 0% to obtain the satisfactory solidification structure, considerably high hardness by heat treatment and wear resistance.
