Ensuring that large diameter seamless tube is being rolled to the right shape and size is a time-consuming process. The biggest delays come from waiting for the tube to cool so that dimensions can be measured manually, and corrections can be made if found to be necessary. This paper describes a system called the Gemini Gauge, which measures the outside diameter of the tube on-line. The gauge is located immediately after the final roll stand. By using this system the operator knows in seconds whether the tube mill is producing perfect product and, if not, he can make corrections without delay.
