This work presents a novel use of the quasiorthogonalrnspace-time coding structure to greatly enhance thernscalability and efficiency of wireless communication systemsrnthrough the integration of ARQ and space-time block codes.rnThe key concept is to integrate space-time coding with hybridrnARQ by utilizing joint receivers upon ARQ retransmissions.rnOur objective is to reduce the retransmission bandwidth whenrnnetwork conditions are suitable. The joint detection schemernrequires standard maximum likelihood algorithms. To achievernlow complexity,Alamouti codes and quasi-orthogonal codes arernadopted. We have found that for moderate channel conditions,rn39 percent of the retransmission bandwidth can be saved withrnvery little performance or complexity penalty.
