Despite the strong influence of plant architecture on crop growth and the resulting yield, most cotton simulation models either ignore it or deal with it in a very rudimentary way. Because of the interaction between the plant architecture and the physiological process, functional-architectural model of cotton that links physiological model and architectural model together has higher mechanism than the traditional functional model of cotton. Two functional-architectural cotton models - Australian L-OZlink model and Chinese Cornerfit model, are compared in detail. This paper addresses the different interactional mechanism between physiological process and plant architecture of the two models, their advantages and the existing problems in them. On the basis of the analysis of the two models, the authors propose that the information flow in the functional-architectural linkage should be configured in both directions and a real feedback model that could integrate environmental conditions, plant architecture and physiological process together should be constructed in the future research.
