The purpose of this paper is to describe and to presentrnthe expected performance of a new sensor dedicated tornFormation Flying.rnThe preliminary definition of this sensor and therntechnical evaluation of possible laser diodes werernperformed in 2005 and 2006, supported by CNES R&Drnfunding. The specifications were initially multimissions,rnbut were recently focused on the SimbolXrncase, a hard X-Ray observatory selected by CNES andrncurrently undergoing a phase A study (see Figure 1).rnThe sensor is based on the latest generation of SodernrnStar Tracker (HYDRA) using APS (Active PixelrnSensor) technology. The main changes concern the lensrnand the software to cover the required field of view andrnto adapt processing to target pattern. The target uses arnlaser diode source and a fiber-optic bench to build arnrecognizable multipoint pattern.rnThe performances obtained are close to the initialrnobjectives thanks to the high potential of the HYDRArnconcept.
