The remediation of contaminated land in highway works

A number of techniques are available for the remediation of contaminated land where it is encountered in highway schemes. However, they have not been greatly utilised to date, and the traditional 'dig and dump' approach has been more common. With the legislative regime for contaminated land now in place in the UK, this is likely to change. The factors affecting the use of remedial techniques in highway schemes are reviewed and those most likely to be successful are identified. Changes to the definition of contaminated land in the Specification for Highway Works are presented.
