This paper presents the experiences of reactive and proactivernpower quality monitoring programme that hasrnbeen carried out by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB)rnsince 1996. Customers’ perception towards powerrnquality issues are highlighted in the paper. Based on ourrnexperiences with the customers and in view of thernsignificant impacts of power quality problems to therncustomers, TNB has, in early 1999, started to embarkrnon a two-year system-wide power quality monitoringrnprogramme as one of the several strategies establishedrntowards resolving the issues. The principal objective ofrnthe power quality-monitoring program is to betterrnunderstand the nature of problems and to formulaternways to reduce or eliminate the impacts. Several aspectsrnof the planned system-wide monitoring scheme such asrnsite selection criteria, measuring equipmentrnspecification, database and analysis functions, 'powerrnproblem analysis services' are discussed in the paper.rnThe paper also briefly highlights the cooperation thatrnexist between TNB and a local university in carryingoutrnresearch related to power quality. Through therncooperation, TNB and University Malaya havernmanaged to develop a ‘trial’ project of on-line powerrnquality monitoring that evolved into the currentlyrnimplemented system-wide power quality monitoringrnsystem. An important output of the ‘trial’ project whichrnwill be highlighted is the development of a uniquernpower quality database system with added emphasis onrna new method to measure voltage sag severity and thernability to identify more accurately sources of voltagerndisturbance.
