TYPE-TESTED AIR-COOLED TURBO-GENERATOR IN THE 500'MVA RANGE

Air cooled turbo-generators, characterized by simplerndesign and operation, are aknowledged components forrnuse in gas turbine and combined cycle plants. Thanks tornintensive efforts in development it has been possible tornprogressively increase the highest unit ratings and at thisrntime the 500MVA mark has been reached. The mainrncontributors besides an enlargement of the size are anrnoptimization of the cooling system and the change to arnclass.F utilization, combined with the introduction of arnclass.H insulation system. By the way of selectedrnexamples, this report describes the development toolsrnand advanced technologies which allow the efficiencyrnto be kept at the known top level of today's largest aircooledrnunits. The solutions are verified by test resultsrnobtained from running tests on a 480MVA unit, whichrnresults in an uprating to 500MVA. The concept showsrnpotential towards even higher unit ratings to keep pacernwith the continuous evolution in gas turbine technology.
