Through the use of antenna arrays at both endsrnof a wireless link, a channel with significant delay and Dopplerrnspread can be decomposed into parallel virtual channels withrnmuch smaller delay and Doppler spreads, thereby simplifying therntasks of channel tracking and ISI mitigation. While one mightrnhope that a sparse physical environment (i.e., few, well-localizedrnscatterers) would lead to a sparse virtual channel representation, rnthis is not necessarily the case. Here we describe how a simplernscaling of antenna inputs and outputs can yield a sparsenesspreservingrnvirtual channel model.
